Pre-employment transition services are designed to help students with disabilities plan for future employment. Through pre-employment transition services, students have the opportunity to job shadow in the community, receive work based learning experiences, and to receive paid internships. Group services are also offered to local schools where instruction on workplace readiness is presented.
Students between the ages of 14-21 years old are potentially eligible for pre-employment transition services. Students utilizing pre-employment transition services must have a 504 plan or Individualized Education Program (IEP).
The pre-employment transition process is a process in which Office of Vocational Rehabilitation (OVR) counselors work with high school students and determine which services may benefit each student. Depending on the type of program, the pre-employment transition process can last anywhere from 10-45 hours.
Group services are offered for 10 hours per student during the school year, job shadowing experiences are authorized for 25 hours and work based learning experiences are authorized for 45 hours of paid internship time.
You can learn a variety of work-related skills through pre-employment transition services that will help you prepare for future competitive, integrated employment. You will improve skills such as time management, communication, cooperation with coworkers and following directions. Job shadowing and work-based learning experiences offer students an opportunity to have a firsthand look at specific employment interests.
