Across Pennsylvania, 303 adults live in 93 community group homes – 55 homes in Erie, 32 in Philadelphia and 6 in Pittsburgh. Residents range in age from 19 to 95 and many have complex medical and behavioral needs that require specialized care, consistency, and a familiar environment to thrive.
But, as with any home, time brings the natural need for updates.
Most of Barber National Institute's housing stock was purchased more than 25 years ago. Many of our homes require costly renovations to their living spaces. Barber National Institute is committed to helping our adults stay at home, but the reality is that public funding falls short of what's needed.
While we receive government funding for essential services, these dollars rarely cover the physical spaces that make excellent care possible.
Renovation, accessibility improvements, and safety upgrades depend on the generosity of donors like you. These $1M renovations are not about aesthetics. They are essential adaptations that directly affect safety, mobility, accessibility, and daily quality of life.
There has been an outpouring of support which has already allowed us to begin much needed renovations in several of our community homes, including long overdue kitchen upgrades that will make everyday life safer, more accessible, and more welcoming for the adults we serve. These improvements are only the beginning.
With more than 50 homes in need of updates, our work to make adaptations is just beginning.
Every doorway widened, every bathroom updated, and every kitchen renovated brings us closer to each adult enjoying the comfort and dignity of a true home.
This project ensures our homes remain welcoming, functional, and secure for those who live there.
Among many worthy causes, this campaign stands out because it addresses an urgent, tangible need- with long-term impact. You’re not funding a program that may change; you’re investing in permanent improvements that hundreds of individuals will rely on every day.
These homes are more than buildings- they are safe havens, gathering places, and sources of pride. Your gift strengthens the foundation on which lifelong care, independence, and dignity are built.
Whether your gift is $25 or $2500, you become part of a legacy of inclusion and hope established by our founder, Dr. Gertrude Barber.
